IMPORTANT CHANGES FOR THE 2018/2019 SEASON

posted Jul 8, 2018, 8:00 AM by ASC Ayr Skating Club   [ updated Jul 9, 2018, 7:38 PM ]

This year, the ASC has revamped our programming to offer our membership the most flexibility at the lowest possible price point. As a result of this a number of our programs have changed. Before registering please take a moment to understand our new program offerings by reading this post and reviewing our new schedule.

Why are we changing our programs?

Centre for the Community Group grant

posted Jun 26, 2018, 9:16 PM by ASC Ayr Skating Club   [ updated Jun 26, 2018, 9:24 PM ]

The ASC sincerely thanks the Centre for the Community Group (http://www.ccgnd.ca) for their generous financial grant.

With this grant the ASC will be able to augment our 2018/2019 instructional programs with video analysis.  Video analysis is a teaching tool which enables coaches to record, review, break down, and compare their skaters' techniques as they learn.  The ASC is thrilled to be able to offer this teaching tool to our skaters.

Be sure to check out the Centre for the Community Group and the great work they do!

From the grant presentation on 25-Jun-2018:

The Centre for the Community Group (CCG) is pleased to announce the donation of $16,000 to local community groups in North Dumfries through its 2018 Grant Program.  Recipients of the donations are the following Non Profit Community Groups, Ayr Skating Club, Ayr Rockets Girls Hockey, Langs Farm, Ayr Minor Softball and the North Dumfries Skate Park Committee.

posted Jun 19, 2018, 6:26 AM by ASC Ayr Skating Club   [ updated Jul 1, 2018, 6:29 AM ]

The volunteer board of the Ayr Skating Club has been working hard to modernize, simplify, and add more flexibility into the programs we offer.

In the coming weeks we will be sharing details about the changes coming to the 2018/2019 skating season.

In the mean time, here is a teaser of some of the great things we are working on:

  • Simplified and lower fees (compared to last year) -- lower fees, that wasn't a typo!
  • More flexible schedules for many of our skating groups
  • Changes to skater groupings to make it easier to understand how skaters progress through their levels
  • Just one season for many groups -- no need to register for Fall/Winter and again for Spring sessions

Our target is to have all the details related to these changes, and open for 2018/2019 registrations by late June/early July.  Stay tuned!

AGM: May 17th, 2018, NDCC Community Room 7 pm

posted Apr 17, 2018, 9:11 PM by ASC Ayr Skating Club   [ updated Apr 17, 2018, 9:11 PM ]

Each spring we hold our AGM (Annual General Meeting), where we take stock of the past year, as well as confirm the board members for the year coming forward.  All skating parents and coaches are welcome to participate in the meeting, and we encourage you to join us, as you will learn a lot about the club and how we run it!

Our club is a non-profit organization solely run by volunteers.  This allows the club to simply cover costs, and pass on low skating fees to the skaters, which we know families appreciate.  However, what this means is that we need volunteers to maintain this approach!  We are always looking for more volunteers to help with the club activities and spread the work across many hands.  This year we would like to have 2 or 3 new board members join the team.  If you are interested in learning more about the role, please feel free to contact us at info@ayrskatingclub.com, or reach out to any of the current board members.

During the AGM, we will do a summary of our registrations, a financial report, summary of our fundraising activities, coaches summary, communications update (website), along with a review of the year by our president.  We will do a formal vote for the board at this meeting, confirming which existing members will stay on the board, confirm anyone stepping down, and voting for new members to join.  The meeting generally lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours.

Please mark your calendars to attend the AGM - it will be Thursday, May 17th, 2018 at 7 pm, in the Community Room at the NDCC arena.

Hope to see you there!  Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions.

2018 Showcase Gala - April 7, 2018 @ 2:00pm

posted Mar 18, 2018, 7:14 PM by ASC Ayr Skating Club   [ updated Mar 18, 2018, 7:18 PM ]

Frequently Asked Questions for Skaters/Parents

What is the Gala?
The Gala is our year end program that we invite all skaters of the club to participate in.  It is a combination of group numbers, as well as solos that showcases the great talent our skaters have learned throughout the season.  It is a great opportunity to invite friends and family to join in celebrating the end of our winter session of skating.

Who participates?
All skaters who are part of the Ayr Skating Club are invited to participate.  The show has group numbers for all of the different classes the club offers (Pre-CanSkate, CanSkate, Jr, Intermediate,Senior and Adult skaters).  We also have solo and dance performances from skaters in the Jr and Sr classes.  Though the Gala is not mandatory, we encourage all skaters to join the show and share in the enjoyment of performing.

How long is the show?
The show runs about 1.5 hours.  It will be split into two sections of 45 minutes each, with a 15 minute intermission.
After the show we will have a social in the MacNeil Hall with snacks and refreshments for everyone attending the gala to enjoy.

Are there costumes?
Skaters are not required to have any costumes for the show.  For skaters performing their solo/dance numbers, they will wear what they would wear for a skating competition.
For the CanSkate and PreCanSkate numbers, you can wear what you would wear to skating each week.  Helmets are still required for the Gala.

Is there anything we need to do ahead of time?
Please try to attend each skating session as per your regular schedule.  Each week, your coaches will dedicate a portion of the session to practice the group numbers, so the kids can learn the choreography.
There will be a practice "run through" for the show on Wednesday, April 4th at 5 pm (The practice will run from 5 to 7 pm).  All skaters are invited to the practice session.  This will be held at the NDCC arena.  This gives the skaters a chance to see all of the numbers, and practice where they are getting on/off the ice, etc.  Please try to attend if possible.

Does it cost anything to be in the show?
There are no additional costs to participate.  There is no admission fees to the Gala, but donations are welcome.  All donations go back to the club, to help with our operating costs.
We will also have a 50-50 draw during the show, again to raise funds for the club.

What happens on the day of the show?
The Gala is on Saturday, April the 7th at 2 pm.
All skaters please try to be there by 1:45 pm at the latest.
Closer to the day of the show, we will send instructions to families on when you need to be in your change room, based on when you are performing in the show.
All skaters will be signed in and out of the change rooms, to track the skaters.  We will have parent volunteers in the change rooms to help supervise during the show.

Can I take pictures?
You are more than welcome to take pictures or videotape your child(ren) during their performance.  We will also have a professional photographer taking pictures at the event, that will be made available for purchase after the show.  Adrienne Zoe has graciously donated her time to take pictures during the Gala.  We will provide you more details on how to view the pictures after the gala, and instructions on how to purchase any of the images if you wish.

How can I help?
We will require parents to volunteer in the change rooms (2-3 parents for each group), as well as families to donate treats and refreshments for the social afterwards.  We will send out an electronic form to sign-up if you are able to help.  We would greatly appreciate any support that brings this fun event to life for the skaters.
